Butterfly Valve Design Differences

Time: 14-November 2025 | Source: I-FLOW| Share

Butterfly valves are among the most widely used flow control devices in industrial piping systems. Their compact structure, quick operation, and cost efficiency make them ideal for a variety of applications, including water treatment, HVAC, marine, and chemical processing. However, not all butterfly valves are the same. The key lies in their design — each type offers distinct advantages based on pressure, sealing, and performance requirements.

1. Concentric Butterfly Valve

The concentric (or resilient-seated) butterfly valve is the simplest and most common design. In this configuration, the stem passes through the center of the disc, and the disc’s sealing surface contacts the seat evenly around its circumference. The seat is usually made of flexible material such as EPDM, NBR, or PTFE, providing a tight shutoff.

Advantages:

  • Cost-effective and lightweight

  • Suitable for low-pressure and temperature systems

  • Easy to install and maintain

Limitations:

  • Not suitable for high-pressure or high-temperature applications, as the soft seat may wear or deform under stress.

2. Double Eccentric (High-Performance) Butterfly Valve

The double eccentric butterfly valve, also known as the high-performance butterfly valve, improves upon the concentric design by offsetting the stem in two directions — behind the disc and slightly off the pipe centerline. This design minimizes friction between the disc and seat during operation, reducing wear and increasing durability.

Advantages:

  • Better sealing performance

  • Handles higher pressure and temperature

  • Lower torque requirement for actuation

This type is ideal for industrial pipelines in power plants, marine systems, and process industries where reliability is essential.

3. Triple Eccentric (Metal Seated) Butterfly Valve

The triple eccentric butterfly valve is designed for the most demanding applications. It adds a third offset — the conical shape of the seat and disc — ensuring a precise, friction-free seal. Metal-to-metal contact between the disc and seat allows it to perform in high-pressure, high-temperature, and corrosive environments.

Advantages:

  • Excellent sealing under extreme conditions

  • Long lifespan and low maintenance

  • Suitable for steam, oil, and gas pipelines

Limitations:

  • Higher cost compared to soft-seated valves

  • Requires precise machining and installation

4. Choosing the Right Butterfly Valve

When selecting a butterfly valve, consider operating pressure, temperature, medium characteristics, and actuation method. Concentric designs suit general water systems, while double and triple eccentric valves handle industrial or high-performance needs.
