How The Electric Butterfly Valves Work

Time: 14-November 2025 | Source: I-FLOW| Share

Structure and Working Principle

An electric butterfly valve consists of three key components: the body, the disc, and the electric actuator. The valve body houses the flow passage, while the disc — the core sealing element — rotates within the flow path to control the fluid. The actuator, powered by electricity, converts electrical energy into mechanical torque to drive the disc.

When the actuator receives a signal, it rotates the valve stem and disc through 90 degrees. In the open position, the disc aligns with the flow direction, allowing fluid to pass with minimal resistance. In the closed position, the disc sits perpendicular to the flow, effectively blocking the passage and achieving tight shutoff.

Control and Operation

Electric butterfly valves can operate in two modes: on/off and modulating.

  • On/off type: Used in applications requiring simple open or close actions.

  • Modulating type: Adjusts the valve position to regulate flow based on system demand.

Signals from controllers or sensors determine how far the valve opens, allowing precise flow regulation. This is especially valuable in automated HVAC systems, water treatment plants, and process industries.

Advantages of Electric Butterfly Valves

Electric actuation eliminates the need for manual operation or pneumatic supply, making these valves suitable for environments where compressed air is unavailable. Their compact design, fast response, and low maintenance requirements make them an ideal choice for modern systems seeking automation and energy efficiency.
