Ball valves are built to last, but they don’t live forever. Whether it’s in your home plumbing system or an industrial application, a faulty ball valve can lead to annoying drips, dangerous leaks, or full-on system shutdowns. So how do you know when it's time to replace a ball valve?
1.It’s leaking, even when closed
A ball valve should stop the flow completely. If it’s still leaking when in the “off” position, the ball or seats inside may be worn or damaged.
2.The handle is tough to turn
That handle should rotate smoothly with a firm feel. If you’re straining to open or close it, there might be corrosion, debris, or internal damage.
3.Rust or corrosion is showing
Especially in outdoor or marine environments, rust spots on brass or stainless steel valves mean trouble. Surface rust might just be cosmetic—but internal corrosion is often game over.
4.Flow is weak or uneven
You open the valve, but the flow seems reduced? That could mean the internal ball is damaged, or debris is blocking the opening.
5.Strange noises or pressure fluctuations
If your system is knocking or the pressure keeps changing, a malfunctioning valve could be the source.
